Extreme Makeover:Home Edition, ABC, November 2005

At David Sharff Architect, P.C. we are always up for a design challenge and a commitment to a worthy cause. In 2005 we had the distinct honor to design a home for an Extreme Makeover: Home Edition episode featuring the Johnson family of Medfield, MA.

A coalition of local construction talent and hard working volunteers was formed to design and build a dream home for the 5 members of this Medfield family. The youngest, age six, has spinal muscular atrophy a degenerative disease. Despite this he is very active and moves around on a motorized device called a Standing Dani Wheelstand, which allows him to move in an upright position and helps him maintain critical muscles.

Prior to the makeover, the family’s old New England farmhouse, besides being in need of repair, posed some difficult situations around the accessibility of the house and yard.

This project posed many challenges and the resulting design had to be:

  • beautiful, functional and accessible
  • appreciated by 9 custom builders known for their quality workmanship
  • buildable by hundreds of volunteers in 106 hours
  • low maintenance but high style
  • compatible with an active family, but still look timeless in a historic setting.
