Adaptive Living: A Barn Converted to an A.D.U. is Designed for Small-Space Living

Jul 30, 2025

We were thrilled to see our Metro West barn conversion—crafted under the new Massachusetts A.D.U.(accessory dwelling unit) law—featured in the July 20th 2025 Boston Globe Magazine that focused on small spaces.

The piece highlights how we transformed a backyard barn into a bright, 900-square-foot accessory dwelling unit with dormers, built-in seating niches, and soaring ceilings. It’s a beautiful example of adaptive reuse and thoughtful family living—where charm meets function in every square foot.

Converting the existing barn structure involved careful planning and a collaborative approach. Dormers added usable head height and light, while maintaining the barn’s simple massing and charm. This image of the original structure shows just how far thoughtful design can take a space.

A new kitchen and dining nook serve as the hub of this compact home. The island provides generous prep space while the adjacent built-in banquette carves out a cozy, light-filled spot for meals, games, and casual work-from-home sessions. The interplay of mint green, navy blue, and brushed brass adds character and visual interest without overwhelming the space.

We designed this two-bedroom ADU to support multi-generational living, with each area doing double duty. The main living space a sitting area, integrated shelving for display and storage, and large windows that flood the space with natural light. Everything is designed to feel open, useful, and welcoming.

The bathroom is a study in how color and pattern can bring joy to small spaces. Bold butterfly wallpaper adds a whimsical layer while soft gray tile underfoot anchors the palette. Custom cabinetry provides practical storage without compromising on style.

The second bedroom is tailored for kids, featuring a built-in bunk bed with hidden drawers and sloped ceiling shelving that makes the most of every inch. Durable finishes and pops of color give this space energy and warmth, proving that small-scale living can still be full of character.

This project reflects our commitment to designing homes that are both beautiful and adaptable. Whether it’s creating new spaces for extended family, or transforming underused structures into something entirely new, we love helping clients make the most of what they already have.
